Zambia's 62nd Independence day
Zambia celebrates its 62nd Independence Day today. On 24 October 1964, Northern Rhodesia gained independence and became the Republic of Zambia. We celebrate those who fought for our freedom and the generations who have since shaped the nation under the Zambian flag.
The flag represents every Zambian. Our independence lives on through the stories passed down by grandparents, the history taught in classrooms and the everyday efforts of people working to build their lives and communities in this country.
We pay tribute to Kenneth Kaunda and the other leaders of the independence movement. We also recognise the contributions of those whose names are not as widely remembered, including people who organised gatherings, supported families during periods of detention and kept the struggle alive across towns and villages.
This special edition features profiles of Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula, Mainza Chona, Reuben Kamanga, Simon Kapwepwe, Julia Chikamoneka and Betty Kaunda. Their contributions serve as a reminder that Zambia's independence was achieved through the combined efforts and sacrifices of many people, not just the significance of a single day.
